Match Made In Heaven?
I have been thinking for a while about the amazingly good match between Rocky (BRN 52817) and Luna (BRN 51086). It is not that common for a breeder to intimately know both dogs. I have been training Luna ever since I got her as a puppy, and I have been training Rocky for over eight months. They both have incredible Dutch working pedigrees. I am very confident that their traits and abilities complement each other so very well. Let’s look in more detail at the potential of Rocky and Luna’s offspring.

Pedigree
Both Rocky and Luna have very strong registered pedigrees. Luna is a Boris offspring with many of her ancestors earning KNPV and IGP titles as well as serving as police dogs. Rocky has an even more famous pedigree. His father Guus participated in KNPV Nationals in 2024, and his grandfather is Bonky has earned many KNPV and scent competition titles. Many of Bonky’s offspring were sold and served as police working dogs. Bonky’s offspring are known for their excellent scent work worldwide!

Performance Record
Luna is a very accomplished dog. Luna earned BS, AD, IGP1 and IGP2 titles at two years old! Then she earned her IGP3 title several months after turning three. Luna then earned her PSA PDC title. I have been training Luna for PSA1, and she should be ready for PSA1 trial this year. In addition, Luna just earned her Explosive Detection Dog certification. Luna has proven capabilities in a variety of sports and working tasks, showing the quality of her traits and capabilities.

Rocky is an incredible detection dog. Rocky can do detection all day long with high drive. I got Rocky eight months ago when he was already two years old. I had to work on some control challenges with him (you can refer to this article about Rocky), but we have made a lot of progress, and Rocky is ready for an official certification in detection. I am also training Rocky for PSA PDC and expect to trial him by the end of 2025.

Character Traits
Luna is a very balanced dog (her working dog sports accomplishments and EDD working certificate prove this). Luna has a very strong prey drive and a balanced defensive drive. Luna is one of the most intelligent dogs I have ever known. Luna figures out what I want very fast and can learn new commands very quickly. She is a bit cautious. This trait can be both an advantage and disadvantage in real-life working situations. While we do not want a dog to second guess us too much, we also want a dog to have a good judgement. Good working dog trainers are looking for a good balance. Luna is on a cautious side, but she is very obedient and very loyal.
Rocky has an incredibly strong prey drive. Rocky is fearless. He was trained to channel his prey drive into excellent scent work. Rocky is also a very strong protection dog. Rocky naturally channels his prey drive into aggression naturally. His bite work is very strong. Many experienced decoys have told me that Rocky has one of the strongest bites that they have ever experienced — stronger than many dogs much larger than him. Rocky has a low threat tolerance. It seems that this is a genetic trait that should have been properly dealt with when Rocky was a puppy. As Rocky was raised in working kennels, he had not received the proper attention and socialization he needed. Rocky is a smart dog, but he does not over-think things. He jumps head-one to get what he wants or needs to do.
Physical Traits
Both Luna and Rocky are very athletic dogs typical to the best of Dutch Shepherd and Malinois breeds have to offer. They are both very strong. Rocky, however, takes athleticism to the next level. He can clear a 1.8-meter hurdle easily from sitting position. He can jump up a 6-foot wall with ease. Both dogs have incredible bite. Many helpers and decoys have commented that for a female, Luna has one of the strongest and best bites they have seen. Rocky takes the bite strength to the next level — just look at his large head that resembles more the head of a Bull Terrier than a Mal/Dutch dog!
Conclusion
Rocky and Luna complement each other so well that it seems that these two dogs have a potential of making incredible offspring. If any of their puppies match either of them, they will be very good working dogs, but the puppies that get a mix of their strongest traits, then they have the potential to be amazingly good working dogs! I believe that any of their puppies can excel in any working dog sports as well as police, military and security work.
So what you think? If this match happens, would you be interested purchasing one of their puppies?
