Was Nancy Guthrie Home Invasion Preventable?
At the time of publishing of this article, the specific circumstances surrounding what happened to Nancy Guthrie—the mother of NBC newscaster Savannah Guthrie—are not fully known. Reports indicate she may have been abducted or harmed during a Nancy Guthrie Home Invasion, but the details remain unclear. Our thoughts are with Nancy Guthrie and her family during this difficult time. Incidents like these underscore the importance of home security for everyone. Examining this unfortunate event highlights the need to consider whether such tragedies might be preventable with comprehensive security measures in place.
When we founded K9 Tech Security, we recognized the growing threat of crimes like home invasions and developed our security system with these concerns in mind. The video that we developed to showcase our security solution has a news segment that wants against similar incidents.
Let’s consider whether any part of the K9 Tech Security solution would prevent this unfortunate incident. First, please take a look at Nancy Guthrie’s house and property from a front aerial view.

According to reports, Nancy Guthrie’s home was monitored by one Ring camera mounted on the front door (door ring camera). It was reported that this camera was not connected to the Ring monitoring service. But even if it was connected, would that have prevented the incident? We do not think so, as Ring does not have a reliable person identification ability. We also do not know whether the person or people who entered the house entered from the front. You can see that the back of the house is covered by dense vegetation and trees and only has a relatively low (seems like a 5 foot) fence. Any intruder could have easily climbed over the fence and broken into the house.
To effectively protect this property from intrusion, we would suggest to install at least 6 cameras as shown on the following picture.

Installing cameras, however, is not enough. The system must include reliable intrusion detection capabilities. K9 Tech Security system is monitored by an advanced video surveillance analytics system capable of detecting human intrusion and even distinguishing between lower risk and higher risk intruders (e.g., intruders who wear masks versus children). Our technology is described in detail on Our Tech page here.
Real-time sophisticated detection would considerably improve safety, but is it enough? How long would it take for the police department to arrive on alert. Even if our system would be connected to an alarm system, would that have scared sophisticated intruders motivated to kidnap a high value individual or hurt an individual for nonferrous reasons?
K9 Tech Security technology has proven itself as a reliable deterrent. It was able to deter an intruder in low light as showns in the photo below taken during an intrusion by one of our installed cameras.

We published a complete account of this incident on our News page here.
The Ring Camera is running a commercial claiming that their cameras can prevent crime better than guard dogs. Even if their commercial was created with humor and not as a serious proposition, they are misleading the public because first of all their detection technology is very basic and error prone, we doubt that their monitoring service is capable of responding fast to every incident, and they do not provide a reliable protection solution on-site against truly dangerous intruders.
If Nancy Guthrie had owned any confident dog with a decent defensive drive, this would have significantly improved her safety (one of the dogs shown in the Ring Camera solution would have helped). Personal protection K9s offered and trained by K9 Tech Security are a step above an average guard dog. This is because our dogs respond to an intrusion as a trained attack response to a command or trained response to an activity. The high-tech system detects an intrusion, and the K9 responds as a reliable armed guard! Would Nancy Guthrie be safer if this dog would have been deployed in her house?
We do not know what happened to Nancy, and we still hope and pray for her safe return. Unfortunately, this incident demonstrates the importance of considering a comprehensive security solution to ensure safety in our homes. K9 Tech Security provides practical solutions that can both detect and confront threats.
