K9 Protection Dogs in Pittsburgh, PA
Imagine this: You and your family are walking downtown enjoying nice spring weather and looking for your favorite ice cream place. The sun is shining, and your small town is peaceful with spring flowers and trees in full bloom. Your children are ahead excited and laughing. Suddenly, you notice a quick movement of a man wearing a hooded shirt and sunglasses towards your daughter. He seems to carry a shiny object in his hand and screaming something strange. You are stunned at first, feeling powerless as you are unarmed and may not reach your daughter in time. But your loyal family guardian is already ready to act - all you must do is let go of the leash. In a second Rocky closes the distance between you and the crazy assailant, he attacks with speed and determination. The assailant does not have time to react to your K9 charging at 30 miles per hour. The assailant was neutralized, and you and your kids are safe!

How We Choose Our Personal Protection Dogs for Sale in Pittsburgh, PA
The first requirement for any dog we deem worthy of our protection canine program is that it must be bred to be a working dog.
Working Dogs 101
In the United States, the term "K9" has become the standard way to refer to working dogs. This abbreviation originated from police departments that started using "K9" to describe their police dogs, with K9 simply being a shorthand version of the word "canine," which refers to the family of animals that includes all dogs. As a result, K9 has become a common term for working police dogs.
But what exactly is a working dog? There are several types of working dogs. For instance, dogs that assist with hunting are considered working dogs, as well as those that are trained to pull carts to market. Generally, when we talk about working dogs, we refer to dogs that perform important tasks in police and military settings.

Our Family Protection Dog Selection Process
We select mature dogs aged 1.5 to 2.0 years, ideally with some basic training in working dog sports like KNPV, Schutzhund/IGP, or Mondioring. This allows us to assess their working character, training, health, and suitability for your needs.
After selection, we focus on training the dogs to meet our customers' specific requirements. These dogs must maintain a high level of obedience while also being prepared to respond to potential threats on command. Often, we train them to use a "hold and bark" technique, where the dog barks to warn of a threat when the owner gives a guard command. The dog will only bite if the person attacks or approaches the owner.
Our personal protection dogs can be trained and sold anywhere in the USA. Clients often refer their friends and family members to K9 Technology because:
- We Utilize an Effective Four-Step Selling Process
- Every Do is Selected to Meet Your Unique Needs
- Every Family Protection Dog is Trained with Your Family in Mind
- We Select Dogs from the Best Breeders in the World

Family Protection Dogs for Sale in Pittsburgh, PA Tailored to Your Needs
While there are certain essential traits that all K9 dogs we select must have, we also take into account the unique needs and preferences of each customer. We start that process by conducting a thorough interview to understand your situation and engage with each adult family member. We then visit your home and property, paying close attention to your living arrangements and specific circumstances. We'll ask you questions such as:
- Do you have children and their ages?
- Do you prefer the dog(s) to live inside or outside the house?
- Do you want a family dog that will spend time with you and your family or a protection dog that would focus on its primary task?
- Do you need a protection dog that you can take with you outside your property to provide protection?
- What are your security concerns, and what are the security risks you seek protection from?
- How large is your property, and what is the local weather?

The Importance of Dog Traits
Dogs, even those of the same breed and from the same litter, can have very different personalities. Some dogs are naturally more family-oriented and exhibit patience around small children, while others may not have that same temperament. Certain dogs are highly energetic and may not be suitable for living indoors with someone who lacks experience in handling working dogs.
Some dogs also possess strong prey and defensive instincts, showcasing a higher degree of aggression that can be valuable for addressing potential intruders. Conversely, there are also dogs that are more balanced and easygoing, yet still fully capable of dealing with your average criminal threat.
Selecting the right personal protection dog for your needs takes many years of experience and knowledge of dog behavior. That's why, at K9 Technology, we've assembled a world-class team for exactly this purpose.

Top 3 Family Protection Dogs for Sale in Pittsburgh, PA
At K9 Technology, one of the most common questions we get often revolves around what the best K9 protection dogs are. That's a difficult question to answer because every breed is different, and every family and individual will have different needs and goals with their protection dog. However, generally speaking, working dogs like the following breeds are often the best.
German Shepards
German Shepherds are commonly chosen to work alongside police officers for a good reason. They are courageous animals, displaying both confidence and boldness. Their high intelligence and ability to learn commands quickly make them a popular choice among individuals and families. When they join a household, they tend to have a calm demeanor and are very affectionate. However, don't be fooled; if their home is threatened, they will respond swiftly to protect their loved ones.

Belgian Malinois
The Belgian Malinois is a highly energetic breed that possesses the strength and vigor of a large dog, all while maintaining a lighter frame. Similar to Dobermans, Malinois are exceptionally intelligent and alert. Like many protective breeds, they require regular physical activity and mental challenges to truly thrive.

Dutch Shepherds
If you're looking for a versatile and highly intelligent protection dog, the Dutch Shepherd is an outstanding choice. Originally developed in the Netherlands for herding and guarding duties, this breed is known for its incredible work ethic, adaptability, and loyalty. Dutch Shepherds are extremely trainable, making them ideal for both personal and family protection.

The K9 Technology Difference

Our Selling Process Explained
Our four-step selling process is very thorough and is tailored to your needs, schedule, and family life. It includes:

Meet - Let's Get to Know Each Other
When our customers reach out, our first priority is to understand their security concerns. We want to know why you're considering a personal protection dog and what experiences led you here. Are you worried about being assaulted and sent to The Remington of McCandless near Pittsburgh, PA? Are you looking for a loyal companion to protect your family? Do you expect the dog to guard you at home, at work, while traveling, or all of the above?
Next, it's crucial to understand your lifestyle. Are you active? Do you have young children? Are you often on the go, and do you live in an urban, suburban, or rural setting? We also want to know your preferences for the personal protection dog (PPD). While some clients care less about appearance, others have specific ideas about size, coat type, and ear shape. It's important that you and your family feel comfortable with your new .
As we learn about you, we make it a point to be transparent about our philosophy. We aim to present the facts clearly to avoid any unrealistic expectations.

Search - We Find the Perfect Family Protection Dog for You
Once we get comfortable with each other, we can begin the search for a personal protection dog. While there might be one available immediately, this is quite rare. Keep in mind that no company can offer a wide variety of sizes, looks, and training levels. Be wary of vendors claiming otherwise, as those with large inventories often focus on selling what they have rather than what you truly need.
At K9 Technology, we tap into an extensive network of top kennels and trainers in the US and Europe. If we don't have a suitable dog available, we'll reach out within our network to find the right match for you

Train - K9 Technology Trains Your Personal Protection Dog
We typically select dogs aged 1.5 to 3 years with some basic training, ensuring they have the necessary obedience and drive. Each dog, even the best trained, undergoes a thorough evaluation and training period with our staff, which can last from 1 to 5 months. We assess what additional training is needed to meet your specific requirements.
Once our trainers are confident in the protection dog's skills, we place the dog with a staff member for a final evaluation, handling it as you would. When we believe the dog is ready for your home, we proceed to the next essential phase of our process.

Delivery - Enjoy Life with Enhanced Peace of Mind
This training course typically lasts from three days to over a week, depending on your experience and comfort level. You will practice real-life scenarios to learn how to instruct your dog to protect you. Throughout this process, we will spend time in your community and accompany you to ensure you feel comfortable taking on the role of handler with your new dog.
Remember, you are not just getting a pet; you are welcoming a trained working dog into your home. We will make sure you understand the basics of handling a working dog, including issuing commands and managing challenging situations.
For those with dog handling experience, we offer less guidance, while beginners receive the support they need to feel confident. We provide essential supplies, including leashes, collars, crates, and enough food and supplements for the first few weeks. We also assist you in finding local veterinarians and health professionals to keep your dog healthy
We visit the homes of all our customers to ensure everything is ready for their new family member. This visit may take place before introducing the dog or be combined with the introduction itself, depending on your preferences.

Former central Pa. high school star impresses as Pittsburgh Steelers’ do-it-all sleeper

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed three players out of their rookie minicamp, but one player is already making the most of his opportunities after that rookie minicamp tryout.
Ever heard of Max Hurleman? If you haven’t, it’s not your fault. Hurleman signed on as an undrafted free agent after his rookie minicamp tryout.
In college, Hurleman played a little bit of everywhere. Hurleman spent his first four seasons at Colgate before transferring up to Notre Dame, where he became a cornerback and return man for the Fighting Irish. With Colgate, he was a running back.
Now? The Steelers have him flipping between slot wide receiver and running back. This week, he has worked exclusively at slot wide receiver.
“I just like to play wherever they tell me to go. I like to say my position’s just football player. So, I have a lot of fun doing it all,” Hurleman said.
A former central Pennsylvania star at Wyomissing, Hurleman is a great athlete who walked on at Notre Dame for his final season. By the end of it, he was running with the second string.
At his pro day, Hurleman received a variety of feedback from scouts about his position. Some wanted him to play offense, while others liked him at cornerback. The Steelers liked him on offense, and that is where Hurleman thinks he turned some heads.
“Since high school, I’ve been training to run routes as a receiver,” Hurleman said. “I just happen to be listed as a running back during my time at Colgate. But even at Colgate, I did play a ton of snaps in the slot, ran the entire route tree. So I’m pretty comfortable with it and I’ve done it for a while. So there’s definitely a learning curve and every coach and every organization likes things a certain way, but I think the fundamentals are there because I’ve done it before.”
Hurleman is working as a return man for the Steelers in addition to his do-it-all gimmick on offense. Unsurprisingly, he looks up to Julian Edelman, who transitioned from quarterback to wide receiver. Some other star running backs who are elite receivers also fit the bill for players he models himself after.
“I can’t help but think of Julian Edelman initially. Just really loved the way that he played the game and obviously the positionless kind of way that he entered the league,” Hurleman said. “That’s very inspiring to me. And just, you know, he did whatever it took to make the team and to help the team win games. So that’s what I’m hoping to do. And I’m hoping to fill those shoes. Aside from that, more current players. I really like Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, their running back styles.”
Hurleman has his head down and is working to earn a roster spot. So far, he has made a few tough catches. That has earned him some praise within the organization as he starts his career in the right way.

As Rite Aid locations shut down across Southwestern Pennsylvania, many customers are trying to figure out their next steps to get their prescriptions.
Some customers won't have to do anything. That is, if they're okay with their prescriptions and their information being transferred to Giant Eagle. For 78 of the locations closing in Pennsylvania and Ohio, it will be transferred to Giant Eagle.
Mary Castillenti is a little frustrated that the Rite Aid in O'Hara Township is set to close, and before it does, she made sure to get there early Friday morning, to be first in line to transfer her prescriptions to another pharmacy.
"It's like one more thing," Castillenti said. "I just want to make sure it goes to where I want it to go."
After the drugstore chain filed for bankruptcy again, it announced transactions to sell its prescriptions to stores like CVS and Walgreens. Now, Giant Eagle said it reached a deal to do the same.
The process will happen in waves in June, with the 78 locations closing. The first 30 will take effect by the end of next week. Giant Eagle will also take over the physical pharmacies at two of the Rite Aid locations, yet to be announced.
It's unclear what retailers will take over prescriptions from the other closing locations in the region.
Jannah Drexler, a spokesperson for Giant Eagle, said that on the effective date set for a Rite Aid location to transfer its information, it will automatically be sent to the closest Giant Eagle.
"Their prescription information that they house in those stores, due to regulatory reasons, has to have another designated home," Drexler said.
If you want to go to a different Giant Eagle location, you can.
If you don't want to use Giant Eagle, you can transfer it to another retailer, either before the effective transfer date through your Rite Aid location, or after, through Giant Eagle.
"We're really trying to make this as smooth a transition as possible for them," Drexler said.
Drexler said the company is reaching out to affected Rite Aid customers to let them know about the change and is actively trying to expand its pharmacy team to meet the new demand, including with some of the Rite Aid employees. They'll also be extending hours at many locations.
KDKA reached out to Rite Aid for comment, but didn't hear back by airtime.

Smoke and haze from wildfires in Canada are again hovering over Western Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection says it is monitoring smoking from large wildfires burning out of control in and around Manitoba.
“While an air quality action day is not expected, some hazy skies and reduced visibility could be noticeable, especially in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth,” DEP said in a post on X. “These wildfires are part of a growing emergency across Canada, and the smoke is expected to drift into parts of the U.S., including Pennsylvania. Hazy skies will be more noticeable Saturday morning and on and off next week, said Bill Modzelewski, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Moon.
“Almost like a haze in the air,” he said. “The winds out of Canada are bringing it down here.”
Wildfire season in Canada starts in early spring and continues through the beginning of November. Canadian wildfires have caused smoke to drift over the region during the past two summers.

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. —
President Donald Trump touted his major announcement to a group of attendees during a speech at the U.S. Steel plant in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania: The tariff on imported steel will be doubled to 50%.
After landing at the Allegheny County Airport Friday, the president made his way to the Irvin Plant where he said U.S. Steel will remain an American company. This comes following last week's announcement that U.S. Steel and Japan-based Nippon Steel would enter into a partnership.
According to Trump, he was approached by Nippon a multitude of times over negotiations. He said he began to take those negotiations more serious when the deal became better for the workers at U.S. Steel.
"There is unbelievable spirit for what you're doing," Trump said as he addressed the crowd. "You're going to have a tremendous relationship (with Nippon)."
Trump said steel was a matter of national security. "If you don't have steel, you don't have a country."
After speaking on Nippon, Trump said he is going to double the tariff rate on steel from 25% to 50%, a dramatic increase that could further increase prices for the metal used to make housing, autos and other goods.
"Which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States," Trump said.
LOCAL REACTION: Steel workers and USW react to Trump's speech in Western Pa.
Prior to the announcement, Trump invited former Steeler Rocky Bleier, current quarterback Mason Rudolph and safety Miles Killebrew onto the stage.
Bleier presented Trump with a customized 47 Steelers jersey, calling him "an honorary Pittsburgh Steeler."
United Steelworkers on the partnership:
Following Trump's speech, United Steelworkers International President David McCall released a statement saying they were not involved in discussions between U.S. Steel, Nippon Steel and the Trump administration. "...nor were we consulted, so we cannot speculate about the meaning of the 'planned partnership' between USS and Nippon or the 'golden share' that some politicians have claimed will be issued to the federal government," the statement read in part.
The statement also says Nippon has a history of unfair trade practices, adding despite recent imposed duties and penalties, Nippon is being rewarded.
It continues:“Issuing press releases and making political speeches is easy. Binding commitments are hard. The devil is always in the details, and that is especially true with a bad actor like Nippon Steel that has again and again violated our trade laws, devastating steel communities in Pennsylvania and elsewhere.
“Our members know from decades of negotiating contracts: Trust nothing until you see it in writing.”
The Associated Press contributed to this article.
BACKGROUND ON TRUMP'S VISIT TO PITTSBURGH
The president's visit to Pittsburgh comes one week after a social media post on Truth Social, signaling to what Trump called "a planned partnership" with Nippon Steel.
"This will be a planned partnership between United States Steel and Nippon Steel, which will create at least 70,000 jobs, and add $14 Billion Dollars to the U.S. Economy," Trump posted. "The bulk of that Investment will occur in the next 14 months. This is the largest Investment in the History of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."
President Trump said the deal will keep U.S. Steel's headquarters in Pittsburgh.
Prior to this stop in Pittsburgh, the post sparked major interest and confusion as to the next steps of negotiation.
On Wednesday, the United Steelworkers issued a statement questioning the meaning of Trump's "planned partnership."
>>> FULL STATEMENT FROM U.S. STEELWORKERS
"We want to provide some clarity on what is known — and more importantly, what remains unknown to everyone who isn’t involved in the closed-door discussions, in which the USW has not been included," the statement read. "We cannot say whether the 'planned partnership' described in Friday’s message on Truth Social or news reports since then represents any meaningful change from the merger proposed in 2023, under which Nippon Steel would acquire U.S. Steel and make it a wholly owned subsidiary."
Timeline of the Nippon-U.S. Steel negotiations
Nippon Steel announced its intention to acquire U.S. Steel in December 2023 for $14.9 billion. Despite promising to keep jobs in the United States, the Biden administration in March 2024 announced its opposition to the acquisition, citing national security concerns.
The deal was officially blocked by the Biden administration in January 2025 after the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) failed to reach a consensus on the national security implications of the deal and referred the decision to then-President Biden.
A lawsuit was later filed by both Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel against the Biden administration, alleging political interference and violation of due process. Both companies claimed the review process was manipulated to advance Biden’s political agenda. They also argued that the decision was influenced by the United Steelworkers union.
In the midst of this, Lourenco Goncalves, the CEO of Ohio-based steelmaker Cleveland Cliffs said in January 2025 that he wanted to make a new bid for U.S. Steel which accepted the buyout offer from Nippon in 2023 after it rejected an offer by Cleveland-Cliffs.
Before President Trump's reelection, he also shared similar concerns to Biden, opposing a deal with Nippon Steel weeks before assuming office.
In March 2025, however, the current president signaled that it may allow a deal to go through after it filed a motion to extend two deadlines in a lawsuit U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel filed against the CFIUS, which scrutinizes foreign investments for national security risks.
A review was launched in April, and a recommendation was submitted to Trump on whether any proposed measures were deemed security risks.
Trump later said the Japanese company wanted to invest in U.S. Steel, rather than solely purchase it.
"They're coming back as an investor, and I feel better about that, I guess," Trump said back in April. "But I know them very well. I know the thinking. That's the investor. They'll invest, and somebody else maybe is sitting in this chair and they will no longer have an investment; they'll have the whole thing. You know, that's the way it works."

Giant Eagle says it's taking customer prescriptions from nearly 80 Rite Aid locations, which are closing after the drugstore chain filed for bankruptcy again.
Giant Eagle says it reached an agreement with Rite Aid to transfer pharmacy prescriptions for 78 locations across Pennsylvania and Ohio. The company says it expects to close on the purchase of the prescriptions in "waves" during June, with the first 30 transfers taking effect by the end of next week.
Giant Eagle will reach out to affected Rite Aid customers to let them know about the change. More details will be available closer to the transaction closing dates in the coming week, the company said.
"We're excited to welcome new patients to our Giant Eagle Pharmacy," Giant Eagle president and CEO Bill Artman said in a news release. "We pride ourselves on running a nationally recognized pharmacy and drugstore business where our licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are committed to delivering trusted, personalized care. When paired with the value and convenience of our drugstore and supermarket offerings, we're proud to provide a comprehensive, one-stop shopping experience."
In the meantime, Giant Eagle says it's "actively" trying to expand its pharmacy team to meet the demand of new patients.
Here are the first Giant Eagle locations to take prescriptions
Giant Eagle says right now, it can share the specific information of 30 Rite Aid locations.
The agreement between the two companies is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, Giant Eagle says.
These are the first 30 pharmacies that will be taking Rite Aid prescriptions.
