“It’s a mix of patriotic imagery, things that relate to the city,” said Andy Ackman, the chief operating officer of Northern Lights Drone Shows, which is putting on the show. “We like to make our shows hit home and bring people what they’re familiar with, and what relates to them. A lot of Milwaukee things up in the sky.”
This comes after the city’s annual July 3 fireworks show was canceled last summer due to funding and logistical challenges.
Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley said using drones this year instead of fireworks saves about $200,000.
He also said drones are quieter and more environmentally friendly.
“We can be our best when we can provide these opportunities to come together, when we can celebrate with each other and create a more memorable experience for future generations,” said Crowley.
There are some people who’ve expressed disappointment that there will be drones instead of fireworks. Ackman said he encourages them to keep an open mind and come experience the new twist on an old tradition.
“It’s easy to be against something you don’t understand or that you’ve never seen in person,” said Ackman. “Once people have eyes on it and experience it, I think people will be excited.”

Rain chances are highest before 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, but most locations should dry out by early afternoon, just in time for parades, games, and fireworks.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued an Air Quality Advisory for Ozone for Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, and Kenosha counties.
The alert runs from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, with ozone levels expected to reach the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” category along the Lake Michigan shoreline.
Precautions:
The heat sticks around into the weekend. On Saturday, heat indices are once again expected to reach the mid-90s to near 100. Thunderstorms are likely to return late Saturday through Sunday morning, with threats including gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy rain.
Scattered storms are also possible Tuesday through the end of next week.
