The story and photos originated in a June 25, 2025, post on Facebook, which was shared more than 22,000 times in just two days. The text caption in the post read:
A 17-year-old high school student in Dayton, Ohio, has been fined and placed under house arrest after authorities discovered he had hacked into the city's outdated traffic control system and quietly fixed the timing of several major intersections.Kameron Price, a self-taught coder and robotics club member, reportedly used a Raspberry Pi and a decommissioned school-issued Chromebook to gain access to the municipal traffic grid. Over the course of several weeks, he rewrote the timing logic for at least five major lights along West 3rd Street--drastically reducing backups during rush hour and syncing green lights to reduce stop-and-go congestion."He didn't disable anything or cause danger," said a traffic engineer speaking on condition of anonymity. "Honestly, his code was more efficient than what we were using."But city officials said the changes violated multiple laws, including unauthorized access to a government system and interference with public infrastructure. Kameron was cited under a local ordinance pertaining to unauthorized modification of municipal services--a misdemeanor typically reserved for utility tampering.According to Kameron's parents, he initially took it on as a side project after watching his bus get stuck at the same broken intersection every morning for weeks. The account that first posted the "Kameron Price" story, "Cops Moment", regularly posts similar stories which neatly highlight a perceived injustice, for example a June 26 story about a retired carpenter in Oregon, arrested for rebuilding bus stop benches that had been removed to deter homeless people; or another June 26 story about a pastor in Ohio who was supposedly prosecuted for violating fire regulations when he allowed homeless people to sleep in his church.
The stories were accompanied by clearly AI-generated images, such as the one that accompanied a June 25 story about a postal worker in Iowa who was supposedly arrested for throwing junk mail in recycling containers rather than delivering them to homes. The image supposedly showing the man in question featured tell-tale glitches in the letters on his USPS badge, meaning it spelled out "UNTERDDUTIES POLCE CAENE" rather than "UNITED STATES POSTAL SERVICE":
The images that accompanied the "Kameron Price" story bore similar hallmarks of having been AI-generated. For example, an image that appears to show traffic in Dayton features a car driving the wrong way, headlong into other cars -- the kind of logic error that is typical of AI-generated images:

In late June 2025, social media users spread a rumor that authorities in Dayton, Ohio, fined a local teenager named Kameron Price and placed him under house arrest for hacking into the city's traffic system to make the stoplights "sync properly."
The claim circulated on Facebook, X and TikTok. Many posts paired the claim with an image presumably depicting Price, his workstation and an intersection with traffic lights. Snopes readers also wrote in to ask about the truth of this claim.
Price did not appear to exist and, as many Snopes readers rightfully pointed out, the image of Price was the product of artificial intelligence (AI) software. A Google search for news stories on Price returned no results from reputable outlets reporting on the story as a true event, nor did searches on Dayton's major local news sites. Thus, we rate this claim false.
The story appeared to first come from a Facebook account called Cops Moment, which posted the false story and fake image on June 25, 2025. While Cops Moment's bio claimed, as of this writing, to provide "exciting stories, real actions, and captivating moments from the world of law enforcement," the page has published at least six posts largely following the same template: a story about a person doing a good — but legally questionable — deed getting in trouble with law enforcement, accompanied by what appeared to be AI-generated images of mug shots.
Cops Moment did not immediately return an inquiry asking for confirmation about the story's origins and whether the page was satirical.
Two AI-generation detectors, Hive Moderation and Sight Engine, rated the image of Price as 99.9% likely to be AI-generated and 99% likely to be AI-generated, respectively. While AI detectors do not always provide accurate results, multiple issues with the image indicated AI-generation, including a car driving the wrong way on the street and the fact that the street sign says "N 3ro," whereas the story claimed Price fixed "five major lights along West 3rd Street."

Details from the falsified story also did not hold up to scrutiny. For example, the story claimed a video of the intersection "running smoother than it has in years" went viral, but a search on YouTube and Google for the supposed video returned no results. The story also alleged "online petitions calling for the fine to be dropped have already surpassed 50,000 signatures." However, a search for any petitions related to a Kameron Price from Dayton, Ohio, did not come up with anything relevant.
The city of Dayton did not immediately return a request to confirm that no one had hacked into its traffic control system.

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — Firefighters from nearly 20 departments spent Thursday evening battling a fire that engulfed a church in Mercer County.
Joe Hartings, fire chief of Chickasaw Volunteer Fire Department, told 2 NEWS dispatchers received a call at 2:36 p.m. for a possible structure fire in the 8500 block of State Route 119.
After dispatchers received the call, the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office alerted those in the area to avoid the roadway near St. Johns Road.
“When we arrived, we had fire running across the whole top of the church and off the roof,” said Hartings.
Individuals were reportedly working to place new shingles on the roof of the St. John the Baptist Church when one person noticed white smoke and heat from the top of the building, according to Hartings.
Hartings told 2 NEWS that firefighters were initially sent inside to battle the flames, but the fire was so intense, crews had to fall back and use a defensive strategy.
“The roof has fallen in and everything is down on the inside,” said Hartings.
For the 135-year-old building, structural integrity was a primary concern. Firefighters say they had a problem fighting the flames because they didn’t have a ladder truck tall enough to put out the fire just below the steeple, leaving it to collapse after being engulfed in flames.
Officials say no one was believed to have been inside at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Now, the community of Maria Stein is left to grapple with losing an iconic piece of their town that has been standing for over a century.
“Devastating, made me sick to my stomach to see it, our church,” said Joyce Brackman, attended church at St. John the Baptist for 36 years. “Never, never thought my whole life I would see our church go up in flames like that.”
Many in the small town community got married in this very church, and are now devastated to see the building so severely damaged.
“This is, it’s going to be a big loss for the community,” said Megan Wuebker, married at St. John the Baptist. “Inside, it’s pretty, we got pictures, it’s really pretty.”
The Archdiocese of Cincinnati issued a statement following the news of the fire:
I was deeply saddened to hear of the fire this afternoon at our beloved St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein. While the fire appears to have caused great damage, I am confident that the faith of this community remains strong. Please know that I am holding each of you in prayer during this time of sorrow and loss. I will remain united with you in prayer in the coming days, months and beyond. May Christ, our light in every darkness, bring each of you comfort, strength and peace.”
