First Look: LA-based Dave’s Hot Chicken brings seven spice levels to first Louisiana location

And between bites of Nashville-style tenders and sliders, a claw machine presents the chance at your own branded toy fowl.

Steeped in personality, the fast-growing, popular nationwide chain Dave’s Hot Chicken landed in the Capital City on Friday, June 20, opening in the Arlington Marketplace spot once occupied by concepts like Uno Dos Tacos. It joins a flurry of hot chicken openings in recent years, including homegrown concepts Chicky Sandos, Chicken Wagon, Blazin’ Hot Chicken and the virtual franchise SmackBird Hot Chicken, located inside Cowboy Chicken.

“The culture of Louisiana is amazing. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming,” says Jorge Frausto, regional director of operations with Cluckin Inc., Dave’s Hot Chicken’s biggest franchisee. “The friendliness was on another level. I knew this was the right place to put ourselves.”

The Baton Rouge location is Dave’s first in the state. More locations are planned for Louisiana, Frausto says.

The straightforward menu features four easy-to-order combos built around hot chicken tenders and sliders served with fries, kale slaw, sliced bread and pickles. Cauliflower is available as an alternative to chicken. Additional sides include cheese fries and mac and cheese.

Dave’s sauce, part of every order, is yet another inspiration from the ketchup-mayo sauce canon. You wouldn’t be wrong to spot obvious comparisons to Raising Cane’s.

But there are clear differences, too, especially when it comes to spice. Dave’s is famous for seven different levels, defined as: no spice, lite mild, mild, medium, hot, extra hot and the trademarked “Reaper,” which requires signing a waiver.

Frausto admits he’s more of a “medium” guy, but that the Reaper definitely has its fans. A recent opening in the northeast Atlanta suburb of Buford saw a record number of Reapers sold in one day, Frausto says. We’ll soon see how Baton Rouge compares.

Dave’s started in 2017 as a parking lot pop-up in East Hollywood conceived by three childhood friends with $900 and a portable fryer. A rabid fan following spread with the help of social media, later attracting celebrity investments from Drake, Maria Shriver and Samuel L. Jackson. That helped catapult Dave’s to more than 300 locations around the country, with some international stores as well. Earlier this month, the Atlanta-based private equity firm, Roark Capital, acquired the company for $1 billion.

Behind that meteoric rise and nationwide footprint, each location pledges a hometown feel, Frausto says. Take a close look at the new Baton Rouge restaurant’s graffitied walls, for example. Among the tags are Red Stick references, including neon signage reading “Death Valley’s hottest,” images of the Louisiana State Capitol and Mike the Tiger, and Dave’s signature mouth-agape rubber chicken astride a Spanish Town pink flamingo.

“The whole vibe is to connect people and to use chicken tenders to start a conversation in any community we put ourselves in,” Frausto says.

Rounding out the spicy chicken-centric menu are four flavors of slushies and chocolate, strawberry or vanilla shakes that can be “top-loaded” with crumbled Oreos, M&M’s or Lucky Charms. It’s one way to put out the fire.

Dave’s Hot Chicken is at 640 Arlington Creek Center Drive. The restaurant is open Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 11 a.m.-midnight.

The summer heat can make your car’s internal temperature dangerous. According to Dr. Mindy L. Calandro, MD., there’s a science behind what happens to your cars in the summer heat:

…on a sunny day, cars are a perfect demonstration of the greenhouse effect. The longer wavelengths of light from the sun get into your car by passing through the windows, but the energy and heat from these wavelengths cannot get out of your car. These trapped wavelengths of light are what raise the temperature inside your car. This is why your car will ALWAYS, no matter the time of the year, be hotter on the inside than it is outside when the sun is shining. It is estimated that the temperature in your car can rise by 20 degrees within 10 minutes. On a typical summer day here in the south, it is possible for your car to get to 125 degrees in a very short period of time. Even if you have the windows cracked, the temperature inside your car will still become dangerous very quickly.

BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU (41-14) enters the 2025 NCAA Tournament as the No. 10 overall seed and will take on Southland Conference Tournament Champions (SLC), Southeastern Louisiana (48-14) in the second game of the Baton Rouge Regional at 4:30 p.m. CT on Friday, May 16, on SEC Network at Tiger Park.

The first game of the double-elimination tournament will be between Nebraska (39-13) and the Big East Tournament Champions, UConn (35-17), at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN+.

The Tigers will host the Baton Rouge Regional for the 16th time and have hosted the regional round in nine of the last 10 seasons dating back to 2015, excluding 2020 (COVID). Matt Shumaker and Amanda Scarborough will call each game in the Baton Rouge Regional, and fans can listen on 107.3 FM with Patrick Wright, The Voice of LSU Softball.

LSU has recorded its third consecutive 40-plus win season and has tallied 40 or more wins in 10 seasons under head coach Beth Torina. As a unit, the Tigers have a .335 batting average behind 468 hits and have 42 home runs, featuring seven grand slams this season – a program record. In the circle, LSU has a 2.79 ERA with 311 strikeouts and has held opposing batters to a .210 average in 343.1 innings pitched. The Tigers’ pitching staff has thrown 13 shutouts this season.

Infielder Tori Edwards, the SEC Freshman of the Year, leads LSU with a .403 batting average and .844 slugging percentage behind 62 hits, including a program-record 18 home runs, has 52 runs and 72 RBI. Edwards is also an NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 10 Finalist and USA Softball Player of the Year Top 25 Finalist.

Infielder Danieca Coffey (.386) has a team-high 64 hits, 52 runs, 46 walks and a .512 on-base percentage, and catcher Maci Bergeron (.373) has 59 hits, including nine homers, 36 runs, 48 RBI and 40 walks on the season. Bergeron has a .608 slugging percentage and .498 on-base percentage this season.

Pitcher Sydney Berzon is 17-7 in the circle with a 2.56 ERA and has 99 strikeouts in 131.0 innings. Berzon has made 21 starts and has thrown 18 complete games, five shutouts and two saves. True freshman Jayden Heavener, also an NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 10 Finalist, is 13-4 on the rubber, has a 2.79 ERA, and a staff-high 148 strikeouts in 113.0 innings of work. Heavener has had five shutouts this season and has the lowest opposing batting average in the SEC at .163.

LSU has a 31-3 record against the 2025 Baton Rouge Regional field, including a 26-1 record against Southeastern, a 3-2 mark against Nebraska, and a 2-0 record against UConn.

The Scouting Report: Southeastern Louisiana Edition

SLU won its second consecutive SLC Tournament title in as many years to earn its second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in the program’s history. The Lions have turned in four straight 40-win seasons, making them one of seven Division I programs to accomplish that feat. Southeastern has a .332 batting average with 526 hits and leads the nation with 194 stolen bases, featuring three players with 25 or more stolen bases. The pitching staff has a 2.15 ERA and 304 strikeouts in 403.1 innings.

The Lions have six batters averaging over .330. Infielder Maria Detillier (.382) leads the team with 68 hits, four home runs, and 54 RBI. Infielders Chloe Magee (.371) and Shelby Morris (.354) have 66 and 64 hits, respectively, and lead the team with 53 and 51 runs scored and 34 and 30 stolen bases, respectively.

Pitcher Macie LaRue is the club’s ace with a 19-2 record, 2.10 ERA and 125 strikeouts in 143.2 innings. Britney Lewinski is behind her with 99.1 innings pitched, registering a 9-5 record, 2.18 ERA and 75 strikeouts.

BATON ROUGE, La. — As part of his part of Kennedy’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be in Baton Rouge Friday to join Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry for the signing of Senate Bill 14.

The signing ceremony will be held at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center. The new law establishes a series of health and nutrition guidelines, including restrictions on certain food chemicals and regulations on what can be offered in vending machines and concession stands across Louisiana.

The visit comes days after U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., welcomed Kennedy to the state, despite recent criticism over Kennedy’s decision to replace all 17 members of the federal advisory panel on vaccines.

Cassidy had previously expressed concerns about Kennedy’s views on vaccines but ultimately supported his appointment after receiving assurances that Kennedy would not promote anti-vaccination positions while serving as HHS Secretary.

The water park normally opens Memorial Day weekend. However, BREC officials said it was delayed this year due to a shortage of certified lifeguard staff.

“This reopening marks an exciting moment for BREC and for families across the region,” said Janet Simmons, interim superintendent. “We’re thrilled to welcome the community back to Liberty Lagoon and celebrate summer with safe, affordable fun for all ages, and we appreciate the community’s patience.”

Saturday, June 28 | 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Staff Training & Development Day – Prior to opening to the general public, access to the facility will be limited to BREC employees and their friends and family; providing essential training to our seasonal staff. This annual training is necessary to ensure that facilities and staff are aligned with BREC’s standards. Entry is limited to BREC employees and accompanying guests.

Sunday, June 29 | 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Public Soft Opening – The park will open to the public with limited capacity. 400 tickets will be available (300 online, 100 at the gate). Tickets will go on sale Saturday, June 28 at 9 a.m.

Monday, June 30 | 12 p.m. – 6 p.m.

The park will remain open to the public with the same limits as Sunday.

Tuesday, July 1 | Closed

Closed for Maintenance and Staff Development – Liberty Lagoon will be closed every Tuesday to ensure top-quality service and facility upkeep.

Wednesday, July 2 | 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Camp & Partner Day – Open to pre-scheduled summer camp and partner groups from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. and to 2025 BREC camp participants. Admission will require at least one child per group to be wearing a 2025 BREC summer camp shirt for entry. One highlight of Camp BREC is weekly field trips to Liberty Lagoon. Standard fees apply.

Thursday, July 3 | 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Open to the Public at Full Capacity – Liberty Lagoon returns to regular summer operating hours.

Friday, July 4 | 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.
