Could a K9 Tech Security Personal Protection Dog Have Prevented This Murder?
The murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York has been in the news lately. Some may ask a hypothetical question, if Brian had a personal protection dog (PPD) with him, could this dog have prevented his murder? Based on my analysis of the murder video reported by New York Post, I think that there was a good possibility that a PPD could have prevented his death.

Let’s take a look at the murder video posted by the New York Post with my added comments.
Before the shooting started. The killer seemed to have waited for Brian behind the parked black SUV. Dogs react to the smell of stress and excitement. Especially a low-threat tolerance PPD could have grown suspicious and alerted Brian when passing the killer. However, this may be a low probability scenario, as PPDs are also trained to ignore distractions on a busy street.
First action. The killer drew his gun and fired the first shot. The first shot did not seem to kill Brian. At this point a trained PPD could have reacted to the shot and attacked the gunman.

Second action. In the second action, the attacker had to draw the handgun and fired the second shot. It was not clear if this shot killed Brian, but a trained PPD should have had enough time to prevent the next shot because the gun seemed to jam.

Third action. The gun jammed and the killer had to clear the jam. This would have given enough time for a well trained PPD to react and prevent the third and final shot.

Fourth action. The attacker shot for the final time that most likely killed Brian.

In conclusion, based on my analysis of the video of the attack, a well-trained K9 Technology personal protection K9 dog could have had enough time to prevent the murder of Brian Thompson. Of course, this is just a theoretical analysis of the events. In real life dogs and people may not behave as expected. Nevertheless, a well-trained dog would have given Brian Thompson a better chance.
